The premiere of a new documentary ‘Voices from Underground – A Dying Breed’ will be held at 2pm on Saturday 29th April at the Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl.
The event brings to a close a two-year project, coordinated by Awen and supported by Bridgend County Borough Council, which tells the human stories behind the coal mining industry in the South Wales valley communities.
The project has involved the creation of five books by ex-miners: pencil portrait artist Gordon Farmer from the Garw Valley; poet Kevin Bryant from the Ogmore Valley; keen rambler Roy Meredith from the Llynfi Valley; John Gates from Maesteg who turned his passion for embroidery in a successful career; and Chris Davies, also from the Llynfi Valley, whose book ‘Never Judge a Book by Its Cover’ will be launched at the event.
The event will also feature special guest music performances and an immersive audio installation by award-winning film music and TV music producers Sylvia Strand and Jonathan Gregory, which is sure to astound audiences with its pre-recorded conversations with former coal miners and soundscape.
