This summer, join Awen Cultural Trust for its first-ever Seascape festival, a celebration of outdoor creative arts performances inspired by the sea. The fun and free family-friendly events will take place in Porthcawl on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd June.
A jam-packed programme of events has been planned for the weekend, including unmissable live music, nautical-themed walkabouts, silent discos, a physical theatre performance featuring a 4 metre-tall puppet and an interactive show which takes place inside an incredible 18 metre-long whale.
The purpose of Seascape is to provide the local community and visitors to Porthcawl with an exciting schedule of high quality creative ‘pop-up’ opportunities to enjoy whilst the town’s Grand Pavilion is closed for its multi-million pound redevelopment, and provide accessible arts experiences for all ages.
As part of Awen’s commitment to inclusivity, there will be British Sign Language interpretation for all live music at Cosy Corner, sensory access packs available to borrow (subject to availability) from the information point and integrated audio description including audio notes for ‘Out of the Deep Blue’.
Richard Hughes, Chief Executive of Awen Cultural Trust, said:
“At Awen, we aim to provide and facilitate enjoyable, affordable and accessible events which brings people together in safe and familiar spaces, and allows them to engage with arts and culture in their own way, whether as a spectator or participant.
“Porthcawl is synonymous with the sea, and celebrating the Glamorgan Heritage Coast in such a fun and memorable way also allows us to gently raise awareness of the environmental importance of protecting our oceans. Our ambition is to work with our partners to make Seascape an annual celebration.”
The council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Economic Development and Housing, Councillor Neelo Farr, said: “We’re delighted to welcome the Seascape Festival to Porthcawl next month. There’s a full programme of activities lined up for all the family to enjoy, and all for free! It’s an exciting new initiative and we hope people will come along and support the festival and join in the fun!”
Seascape is funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, in partnership with Bridgend County Borough Council, and Arts Council of Wales.
